Action Learning: A Different Intervention
"Action Learning is an educational process whereby the participant studies their own actions and experience in order to improve performance. " Wikipedia.
Staff learning and development is essential for organisational success and survival. However, trying to source different interventions to facilitate performance development particularly for middle level and senior staff members who have attended training workshops can be difficult. Action Learning Sets could be the intervention that you are looking for. Action Learning is a simple yet very powerful tool where a small group of people who meet at agreed regular intervals work on real work based issues and challenges. Participants explore, discuss and reflect on the different but often very common challenges that exist at work, using the experiences of the members enabling them to see diverse perspectives and the bigger picture. Through this process of reflection and exploration new ideas or approaches are identified that can be applied to each members’ situation. A generally accepted definition of action learning is:
Learning from concrete experience of real world problems; critically reflecting on that experience through group discussion, trial and error; and learning from each other.
Action learning is a structured process of collaborative learning, action and reflecting. The group or set learns with and from each other. A safe environment is created in which the members can present their challenges, ask searching questions, gain support and seek input. Throughout the process, which is facilitated by a skilled facilitator, the members become mentors to each other; a process which offers further personal growth and development.
